About DesMoinesFamilies.com

Iowa’s capital city is undergoing a major revival, and it’s more important now than ever for us to think creatively about how our babies, toddlers and kids can be an asset to this (forgive the gratuitous use of a buzz word) revitalization.

With more than 100,000 residents under the age of 15, Des Moines has the opportunity to endear this impressionable young group to their hometown before they get hip to our ulterior motive – keeping their bright minds and big dreams here!

Des Moines Families helps our city’s ankle-biters get jazzed about their city.

We do that by helping their parents fight the shut-in urge that comes so quickly after leaving the maternity ward. The unpredictable behavior of new babies, ornery toddlers, moody adolescents and even moodier teens often makes exploring new places intimidating.

This site, designed and supported by Des Moines parents, eliminates some of the guess-work that comes from taking the family to new places around the metro.

While every restaurant, store and event isn’t going to be appropriate for children, there's more out there than you think.

We tell you everything from which restaurants keep the high-chairs and crayons stocked to where the babysitters are and how to contact them. Local parents come here to dish about the best (and worst) establishments in our community and their methods for handling awkward outbursts in some of the city’s well-known haunts.

If we want our kids to love this city like we do, they need to look around. I hope this site gives you some great ideas for opening their eyes to all things Des Moines.

Paula Abdul is no accident

She calls herself an “accidental star.” But from where I was sitting, listening to Paula Abdul tell her story of perseverance, tenacity and ridiculous willpower, her celebrity seemed anything but accidental to me.

Paula was the final celebrity to visit Des Moines for the 2013…

Lara Logan will stick with me

Calling her defensive wouldn't be fair, but you could tell as journalist Lara Logan broached the subject of her beauty Monday night at the SmartTalk event in Des Moines that she'd had to address it many times before. But just look at her... it's distracting, to say the least.

Her defensiveness (if that's…

Not ready to let go of winter?

Cleaning off my deck this weekend was awesome. I love playing in the dirt, getting ready for spring. My 6-year-old, on the other hand, has been super sad to see the snow go. Mainly because he developed a big-time love for winter sports. In fact, his first waking words this very morning were: Mom, can you buy me a snowboard?

So I thought I'd share this... it's gonna be huge for our family. Had you heard of this?!?

Skating rink to open at…

Why you've never heard of Joan Blunden

You've likely never heard of Joan Bluden. That's because moments before her very first "man on the street" TV news appearance, her boss and the producer at the local news station told her to go with "Joan Lunden." (He thought a reporter with the last name "Blunden" made it too easy for the competition to poke fun at the lady reporter's credibility).

This is just one of several fun facts I learned sitting in…

Hi, Kelly! I'm new to the site and I'm just looking around. I noticed this post listed in the "Classes for Kids" section:
Signing Smart (Ages 4 mo. to 20 mo.) - A playful environment where parents or caregivers and their hearing children learn ASL signs and research-proven Signing Smart™ Strategies.
Just wanted to let you know that the link doesn't work, so I assume they are no longer offering these classes. Since I AM offering this type of class, how do I post my info in that section on this site? Here are my websites: www.facebook.com/babysignlanguage and www.mysmarthandsdesmoines.blogspot.com. Thanks for your help!

Hi - On the "kids eat free" page - you can add Granite City on Tuesdays - we ate there last Tuesday and they said that kids eat free (with adults purchasing meals).

Hi Kelly. This is a great site! I loved the DMR article on restaurant family nights. You and I actually knew each other in a previous life. I started at Integer - I was Kortney Nichols then - a couple of months before you left. I was the account coordinator on DMI at the time. I worked at Integer until last summer when we had our first baby and now I stay at home.

I have a company you can add to Mom and Dad Owned Businesses, under Natural Parenting. It's Diaper Dudee which is a cloth diaper service in Des Moines. The Web site is www.desmoinesdiaperservice.com.
