5 Easy Ways to Stretch Your Grocery Dollar

I’m all for making small, relatively painless changes in our habits in order to stretch our grocery dollars. On my site Housewife Hacks, I talk about the basics for running a household on a tight budget. But there are always small ways to save even more. Here are a few that work for me:

1. Buy Rice in Bulk. Sometimes it’s nice to have a few of those microwaveable rice packets on hand for last minute emergencies. But ounce for ounce, you’re much better off buying rice in bulk. I’m not normally a huge warehouse shopper but rice is one item that you will find enormous savings on at places like Costco and Sam’s Club. If you’re looking for more exotic varieties, check ethnic groceries. You’ll find a much better price on Basmatic rice at an Indian grocery store than at your supermarket. We use a rice cooker to make quick work of steaming rice.

2. Choose yogurt in larger multi-serve containers intead of singles. It’s cheaper, wastes less packaging, and we sometimes buy plain and flavor our own with jam, honey, or maple syrup. Vanilla is also delicious and great for smoothies.

3. Stretch ground beef with beans. Substitute part of the meat portion of your recipe with beans that you grab on sale. Ounce for ounce, beans are usually way cheaper than beef.

4. Buy chicken quarters when they go on sale. You can either throw them in the slow cooker or braise them. Take the meat off the bone, shred or chop, and freeze. Then when you have recipes that call for cooked chicken meat you’re set to go and you’ve saved a bundle. Sometimes I get chicken quarters for as low as $.39/lb.

5. Go bigger. It sounds counter-intuitive but it can work out to your advantage. When Thanksgiving turkeys dropped to an amazing price, we purchased a larger bird than we needed for that day. We have chopped turkey meat frozen in bags that will help make easy inexpensive meals. This is also a time saver!

What are the ways that you stretch a dollar with your groceries? I'd love to hear here on Des Moines Families.
